Let’s get the show on the road! Ministers Frank Anthony and Shaikh Baksh at the kick off

One hundred and twenty five (125) schools from the ten administrative regions and Georgetown are vying for supremacy as the inaugural nationwide Digicel Schools’ Football Championship opened yesterday afternoon at the world famous GCC ground, Bourda.

The competition, which is being hosted under the theme ‘Unite, Develop, Excel’, is sponsored exclusively by cell phone company Digicel, in collaboration with the Sport and Education Ministries.

Quite appropriately, Sport Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, and his colleague at the Education Minister, Shaikh Baksh, made the ceremonial kick off to get the tournament underway, with St Mary’s Secondary and St Stanislaus College having the honour of playing the first match.

Speaking briefly before the kick off, Dr. Anthony said the tournament “is quite historic for school sport.” He noted that the collaboration with the ministries and the corporate entity is a step in the right direction for football-a partnership which will aid the development of the sport.

The minister, who also has responsibility for Youth and Culture, urged the players to make maximum use of the opportunity as sport will help them to “develop a healthy attitude in a fun way.”

Minister Baksh, who noted that sport and physical education are integral parts of his ministry’s mandate, pointed out that the championship is another step towards the growth of sport in schools.
